What is Harmonic Filtering?

The phrase “harmonics” refers to the current harmonic distortion and voltage within an AC circuit. Harmonic voltages and currents are caused by non-linear loads such as variable speed drives (VSD), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), low energy lighting and switched mode power supplies in devices such as personal computers.

High voltage distortion, current distortion and high neutral-to-ground voltage caused by harmonics can result in equipment failure, production down time and costly repairs to the electrical distribution network.

How does Harmonic Filtering work?

Harmonics increase the amount of power required by the system due to a reduction in power quality, contributing to a lower power factor and higher energy costs as a result of the reduced efficiency of the system.

Harmonic filtering acts to filter out the electrical harmonics in a system. This can reduce overheating of equipment, reduce nuisance tripping of circuit breakers and fuses and improve power quality contributing to reduced energy costs.

Types of Harmonic Filtering

There are two main types of harmonic filters used for VSDs – active and passive.

To monitor the current for a complete installation, active filters inject currents to mitigate harmonics as required. This way a single active filter can be used for filtering of many VSDs of varying sizes.

Typically, passive filters filter a single drive, which means a separate filter is required for each VSD in a multiple VSD system.
